That’s a good point. You need a basic understanding of php to really “get” the book and understanding the underlying drupal architecture. It’s definitely a developer’s book, not an admin’s guide.

Pro Drupal Development is my bible. It was the first Drupal book that I’ve bought and I consider it an invaluable resource.

My only addition to the review is that this book is also not for developers who aren’t already familiar with PHP. If you don’t at least understand basic PHP syntax, you may get a bit lost trying to understand the examples.

I was utterly baffled by your comment about “the opposite direction” then I understood that drupalbook.com has a link to this review and you’re wishing that other folks go from here to there.

Yeah, that’s cool he links this review. There must be dozens of reviews of that book and I would think he would have some great ones from people who are well-known in the industry and community. Maybe that’s the point — those might seem like buddy deals.

Anyway, as I say in the review, I definitely concur. If you spend time building sites with drupal, even just as a themer, it’s an indispensable book. There are some new ones out too on SEO and module development and more, but I still haven’t bought any of those yet.

If anyone is reading this and you know of a drupal book that is of top quality, please list the book and author (and a link to where to buy if possible).

Very helpful in tipping me over the edge to buy the book – I’m a cheap bastard too and don’t like parting with money when I’m not 100% sure that I need to.

I think the author is VanDyk, not Van Dyck. :)
